The first check you get from your insurance company is often an advance against the total settlement amount, not the final payment. It typically is the total loss less recoverable depreciation and deductible.
Recoverable Depreciation is the gap between replacement cost and Actual Cash Value (ACV). You can recover this gap or depreciation by providing proof that shows the repair or replacement is complete or contracted.
If you're offered an on-the-spot settlement, you can accept the check right away. Often the initial claim will have missing items or isn't measured accurately. We always find other damage. Then we supplement the claim and file for an additional amount.
